May 1, 2013 - "Frightened Rabbit" Band Tour News -
"During the final ten days of the tour we found ourselves, amongst other things, getting a wee bit tipsy with Laura Dern, playing a show at an ungodly hour with They Might Be Giants, singing a wee tune with Andy Hull, jumping into bushes wearing conical Asian hats and fairly regularly 'heating up' one another via light fist fights and hearty rouses. It appears that Lynch's muse is in fact a really big Frightened Rabbit fan, and it was an unexpected pleasure when she and her pals came to say hello after the show at Terminal 5 in New York. Laura was like the fun aunt at the party, with a good line in sass and I was pleased that she seemed impressed by my on-stage jokes."

The Stardust Motel in Rapid City — with its iconic red and yellow sign with a star on top — will play a part in an upcoming Hollywood movie that was shot in and around the Black Hills. The film shoot last week also included scenes at Mount Rushmore and on a highway near Black Hawk, and drew several stars to the area. Among them were Laura Dern of "Jurassic Park," her father Bruce Dern, star of many motion pictures and nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in “Coming Home.”  Will Forte, best known for his comic work in the series “30 Rock”, “Saturday Night Live”, “How I Met Your Mother,” was also in the scenes shot locally. The movie, "Nebraska," is being directed by Alexander Payne, who scored a recent hit with the comedy “Sideways,” which was regaled by critics. He also directed “The Descendants,” which won one Oscar and was nominated for four others, including Best Picture. Written by Robert W. Nelson, "Nebraska" was not based on Payne's own personal experiences, although he grew up in Nebraska. Described as a “comedy with undertones,” production manager Mads Hansen said the movie is about a father-son road trip.

June 1, 2011 - Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER Gets Three More -
It seemed unlikely not too long ago but Paul Thomas Anderson’s controversial sounding religious cult film The Master, with the help of billionaire backer Megan Ellison, is gearing up to shoot in just a matter of weeks. Phillip Seymour Hoffman stars as the charasmatic Lancaster Dodd who upon returning to America from the horrors of WWII creates his own religion, a fictional Scientology-esque cult, seducing a former alcoholic as his apprentice. Joaquin Phoenix was recently hired for that role which will mark his comeback to acting, taking on the part Jeremy Renner had nailed down last year before PTA’s initial funding was cut. Variety reports that three more names can be added to the cast via the names of Observe & Report and Friday Night Lights star (and kind of a young but constantly perplexed Matt Damon lookalike) Jesse Plemons who will play Dodd’s son, Laura Dern (possibly as Dodd’s wife, the trade doesn’t say) and veteran actor David Warshofsky who will play the detective.

The Independent Spirit Awards is moving from Santa Monica beach to downtown L.A. Film Independent said Thursday that the kudocast would be held in a tent at the L.A. Live complex. Org announced in August that the date was shifting as well. Event will be held at 8 p.m. March 5, two days before the Oscars, meaning the show has transitioned from its traditional daytime affair into a nighttime event.Moving to the evening allows TV viewers to connect more to independent film, said actress Laura Dern, chair of the 25th Spirit Awards event committee. Dern also added that heading east to Downtown L.A. makes sense because the revitalized area is a "kindred spirit." As far keeping the show relaxed and "anti-Oscars" -- Dern said the kudos would remain casual. Attendees are still encouraged to arrive in jeans rather than a tux or elegant dress.
September 3, 2009 - Reuters - Continuing in their quest to regain television network preeminence, HBO has given the greenlight to yet another pilot.  “Enlightened”, the tentatively-titled, single camera comedy which stars Laura Dern, was developed by “School of Rock scribe Mike White. Also unlike the new HBO dramas, “Enlightened” was put on a fast development track due mainly to Laura Dern’s much-lauded performance as Katherine Harris in the network’s own “Recount” back in 2008.  White, who had directed Dern in 2007’s “Year of the Dog”, will direct the pilot episode of the series which has Dern playing a “self-destructive woman who has a spiritual awakening.”
August 6, 2009 - (Hollywood Reporter) -
HBO is being "Enlightened" by Laura Dern and Mike White. The pay cable network is developing a comedy in which Dern would play a formerly self-destructive woman who, after having a spiritual awakening, becomes determined to live an enlightened life, wreaking unintended consequences. The script comes from White, the "School of Rock" scribe who recently competed on "The Amazing Race" with his father. "There are so many dysfunctional types of characters populating cable television, and she is equally as dysfunctional as any of them," White said, "but her impulse is to get healthy, to make the world a better place even though it creates havoc." The project stems from Dern's standout performance as colorful Florida Republican Katherine Harris in the 2008 HBO film "Recount," which earned her a Golden Globe Award and Emmy nomination. HBO approached the actress about a deal. Dern was intrigued but wanted to commit only if she found the right material. She turned for advice to White, with whom she had developed a close friendship following her role on his 2007 film "Year of the Dog." At first, White was OK with just helping her navigate her way into a TV series -- but that quickly changed. "I'm such a huge fan of hers as an actress and a person, I realized I was going to be jealous of anyone doing (a show with her), so I just had to do it myself," he quipped. White had already been bouncing around an idea for a feature script as a potential starring vehicle for Dern. She also had thoughts about what kind of series she wanted to do. The two ended up "fine-tuning" their separate ideas in what became the premise of "Enlightened," said White, who hopes to shoot the script by the end of the year.

Elise Overland's Spring '09 presentation Saturday night had all of the natural accoutrements: jewelry by Genevieve Jones; friends including Hope Atherton, Poppy de Villeneuve, Arden Wohl and Zani Gugelmann, and requisite male eye candy like Jamie Burke and Diego Garcia. But some unexpected guests were making the rounds, too, at the darkly lit Chelsea space. Courteney Cox Arquette and Laura Dern arrived together, both wearing Overland's clothes. "I'm here because of Courteney," explained Dern, who is mid-filming an untitled project with her father. Cox Arquette, who is friends with Overland's stylist Maryam Malakpour, had only raves for her outfit. "It fit me perfectly when I tried it on," said the lithe actress who had just attended the Loden Dager show. "It's the perfect size four." Dern and Cox Arquette will be supporting another design effort Monday night when their respective husbands, Ben Harper and David Arquette, launch their joint menswear line Propr at the Bryant Park Hotel.

August 14, 2008 - USA Today - "Cox takes a short step to directing" - Courteney Cox adored directing much in the same way Monica Geller, her neat-freak Friends character, loved her cleaning products. "I'm detail-oriented in life, so it was a perfect fit for me," Cox says. "I'm definitely a morale-booster to the crew. I like to work with music. It's your job to keep everybody doing their best and happy to be there."
She's making her directing debut as part of Glamour magazine's 2008 Reel Moments series of short films. The project, which is in its fourth year, has enabled stars such as Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jennifer Aniston to go behind the camera. This year, Cox, Demi Moore and screenwriter Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith (The House Bunny, Bride Wars) get their shot. The shorts, sponsored by Suave, will be unveiled at a Los Angeles premiere Oct. 14 and afterward can be seen online at
glamourreelmoments.com.
"My short's about a girl, played by Laura Dern, who has a chance encounter on a bus that confirms the decision she makes to be single and reinforces her faith in herself," Cox says. "I have so many single friends. It's tough. This story speaks to people. You don't have to have someone complete you."
In reality, both Cox and Dern are married — Cox to actor David Arquette, Dern to musician Ben Harper — and they're friends. "Laura is a very warm, sweet, talented woman," Cox says. "She gets approached (for projects) a lot, but she really connected to this. She let go and trusted me. It brought our friendship even closer."

Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith -
Laura Dern is well aware that partisans are already lining up on each side of the political debate to greet with enthusiasm -- or annoyance -- "Recount," HBO's May 25 movie about the hotly disputed 2000 election, in which she plays Katherine Harris, Florida's secretary of state. Dern points out that former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, chief legal adviser for the George W. Bush campaign, "not only likes the film, he's hosting a screening along with Jimmy Carter. That says it all to me; they're very clearly declaring this is a non-partisan project. That ought to hush people up, hopefully. See it. Just watch it," she says. "This is what happens when you get disillusioned, sit [at] home and not vote. Your vote counts." Kevin Spacey leads a cast including Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt, Denis Leary, Bob Balaban and Ed Begley Jr. in the telefilm -- which might be the last work the Oscar-nominated actress does for a while. Dern is planning to star in a feature with her father, Bruce Dern -- which will be a first. "Although I've worked with my mother (Diane Ladd) several times, my dad and I have never worked together," she says. "I've never had the honor, so I'm really looking forward to it. He's also directing this one," which is going under the temporary title of "Hart's Location." But …
"Everything is on hold because of the potential Screen Actors Guild strike. It seems very possible. Certainly the Actors Guild is not going to back down. It's an issue of livelihoods," she says. "There aren't TV movies as there used to be. Reality shows have overtaken scripted shows. Fewer features are being made, and those that are, are being made for less money. A lot of actors are being wiped out, getting jobs outside the industry, losing their homes. But at the same time, the producers hold great opportunities to make money in the new media, so new agreements have to be made -- as the writers ultimately, finally were able to do."

April 30, 2008 - Washington Post - 'Recount' Screening Brings Back Memories, Evokes Anxiety -
Laura Dern arguably steals the show in "Recount," the upcoming HBO flick about the contested 2000 presidential election. And after sitting next to Dern at a private screening of the movie Tuesday night, we know who her biggest fan of all is: her husband, Ben Harper, the Grammy award-winning soul/folk/funk musician who laughed riotously at his wife's every scene. Dern plays the colorful Katherine Harris, who, as secretary of state of Florida, tried to call the state's presidential election -- and thus, the entire contest -- for her friend George W. Bush. After many twists and turns the dispute over the recount was eventually decided, in Bush's favor, by the U.S. Supreme Court. Dern does a spot-on, if slightly over-the-top Harris, who, as a congresswoman after her secretary-of-state stint, was one of the most lampooned members of the House. Dern and Harper were seated at the table next to the Sleuth at a dinner and screening in a huge backyard tent at the home of Washington Post icons and uber power couple Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee. After dinner, we turned our chairs to face the big screen and watch the movie -- Dern and Harper sat together directly in front of us, just a few inches away. Harper laughed and stroked his wife's arm and kissed her shoulder during her scenes, which often involved an accentuated voluptuous and hilariously sexually suggestive version of secretary of state Harris primping for the cameras, relishing her role in the limelight of the recount. The portrayal wasn't far off from reality. In one scene in the movie, Dern as Harris compares herself to Queen Esther in the Bible: "She was willing to sacrifice herself to save the lovely Jewish people and that is exactly what I am doing right now." The tent exploded in a chorus of laughter, led by top fan and hubby Harper.

Actress-turned-director ROSANNA ARQUETTE has given her support to the Hollywood writers' strike - despite the ongoing struggle halting production on her new movie GOD IS MY CO-PILOT. The Desperately Seeking Susan star experienced first-hand the effects of the ongoing strike after she was prevented from working with a screenwriter on the film script due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) action. But Arquette isn't bitter about the protests. She says, "The strike affects us all in Hollywood. I am trying to direct my first film and I want Laura Dern as my lead. It is a difficult situation. In fact, it is going to be a revolution. "Creative people who have the ideas are right to want more than the measly amount of money they get now." Members of the WGA have been staging walk-outs since 5 November (07) after talks between the union and studio representatives failed to resolve a dispute over royalties.

When asked if she'd be interested in reprising her role for a third time, Dern made no bones that Spielberg's call was an offer she couldn't refuse. "Well a certain fellow is the one that called me and it’s hard to say no to him cause he’s always got something totally genius up his sleeve so we’ll see what they have in mind. But I don’t know anything about it at this point." Dern also mentions that Universal and Amblin may be shooting for a 2008 release, although this does conflict with last word from producer Frank Marshall that the fourth "Jurassic Park" film wouldn't be put on the front burner until Steven Spielberg was finished with "Indiana Jones 4."

"Tuesday 3/20 'round 2pm - Laura Dern and Ben Harper meeting up with some regular folk at Joe's Diner on Main St in Santa Monica. Ben was in dark pants and a plaid flannel shirt and ballcap and Laura was in dark jeans and a black quilted ski parka. I think she's in her 40s, but her skin is amazing. She looks maybe 35."

January 9, 2007 -  Dern in the dark about return to the 'Park' (IGN.com) - "Jurassic Park's" Laura Dern is making the press rounds promoting her new film "Inland Empire," and IGN Filmforce had the chance to ask the question that any "Jurassic Park" fan would jump to ask Dern: Will Ellie Satler be returning in the next proposed film in the franchise? Unless she's playing things close to the vest, Dern seems to be as uninformed about "Jurassic Park IV" as the general public. "I hope you guys can tell me," Dern said. "...People keep telling me I’m in 'Jurassic Park IV,' my character’s in it, I’m in it, and I haven’t gotten the call yet, but I’m very curious to hear more… You never know. It was awfully fun." IGN then asked, "Do you want to get eaten in this one and get kinda killed off…?" "No! The great paleobotanist can never die!" "Jurassic Park IV" is currently in development at Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures. To date, no credible sources have confirmed the return of Ellie Satler or any of the series' other characters.
